DUTCHESS COUNTY

Within 60 miles of New York City, Southern Dutchess County has, within recent years, drawn growing numbers of families whose breadwinner commutes to Manhattan. Many of these families lead upscale lifestyles. They are able to purchase larger, more high-end homes in newly built executive housing developments in Dutchess County, than would be affordable in the traditional New York City suburbs. These families also appreciate the excellent public school systems and recreational opportunities that come with a move to Dutchess County. As a result, Southern Dutchess County has increasingly become a densely populated middle to upper-middle class area.

Northern Dutchess County has also grown significantly over the last 10 years. More national, regional, and local companies have opened facilities in the region. Proximity to New York City, along with a lower cost of living, and a highly skilled workforce, has made conditions attractive for business.

Dutchess County is home to four nationally renowned colleges: Vassar College, Bard College, Marist College, and the Culinary Institute of America. This concentration of institutions of higher learning has also contributed to the cultural opportunites available to County residents and visitors. Classical music performances, art galleries and museums, and gastronomic excellence are the fare at our charming area campuses.

Not surprisingly, Northern Dutchess County has a long tradition of tourism. Tourists are drawn from throughout the New York area and beyond, by the

  • Hyde Park homestead of FDR
  • Splendor of the Hudson River Mansions built by New York City's industrialists a century ago
  • Artistic town of Rhinebeck
  • Horse country and vineyard of Millbrook
