Billboards and the Hudson Valley Market
Outdoor
advertising is a unique medium that communicates to all audiences
on the go. Virtually everyone motoring by a billboard, drivers and
passengers alike, will see the advertisement.
Over
the last 20 years, there has been a substantial increase nationwide
in dual income families, multiple car ownership, and suburban residency,
resulting in many more vehicles on the road. Ever-increasing numbers
of people commute to work, and must drive to shopping and other
activities.
Further,
the Mid-Hudson Valley is a fast growing market for outdoor advertising
because it has seen significant population growth. Westchester,
Putnam, and Orange Counties are bedroom communities for Manhattan,
with continuous residential development.
In addition,
the commuting area to Manhattan has, over the last five years, extended
into Southern Dutchess and Ulster Counties, on either side of the
Hudson River. For example, from 1997 to 2000 alone, Dutchess County
saw a 3.5% increase in population. These new residents are middle
and upper-middle class consumers, many of whom work in New York
City, or commute to other urban centers.
The
trend of Manhattan residents with high disposable incomes buying
or renting second homes in Northern Mid-Hudson Valley also continues
unabated. Specifically, many weekend homes are maintained in Dutchess,
Ulster, Sullivan, and Greene Counties, all of which offer country
pursuits within a mere two hours of New York City.
The
same natural and recreational resources that draw second-home purchasers
also mean that the Mid-Hudson Valley is a major tourist draw. Visitors
can enjoy everything from the history of the FDR Homestead, to the
beauty and recreational opportunities of the Catskill Mountain Preserve.
